Therapeutic Counselling

      Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Supervisor

      Andrea Rickman MBACP (Accred) UKRCP

I am a BACP Accredited counsellor and psychotherapist and a qualified supervisor with over fifteen years and thousands of hours of client experience, both in short term counselling and long-term psychotherapy.  My counselling and psychotherapy training began back in 1999 when I did an introductory course in 'Communication and Human Relationship Skills' leading on to an Integrative training at Certificate level. I then went on to do a Psychodynamic Advanced

Diploma and three years later did some additional training in 'Helping Children and Young People'. I also have a certificate in Couples counselling and a Certificate in Psychodynamic Supervision. I would describe my approach and philosophy of supervision as relational, and I work in an integrative way.

I work mostly on a one-to-one basis but do some couples counselling, I also offer supervision to individuals and groups.  I have extensive experience of working with adult survivors of childhood abuse and trauma, once founding and co ordinating a self-help/support group for female survivors of childhood abuse supported by the Department of Psychological Therapies.

I currently see clients in my private practice in Christchurch, I am an affiliate counsellor for organisations offering the Employers Assistance Programme (EAP) and also work as a supervisor both in my private practice and supervising a group of counsellors within a counselling charity.  Previous experience includes counselling for Dorset Action on Abuse, Compass Counselling (WPF) and Southampton Counselling and Therapy Centre (Psychodynamic Counselling service)

As a Psychodynamic/Integrative supervisor, awareness of unconscious processes, exploration of early attachments/childhood experiences and thinking about how these continue to influence and impact upon present ways of being and relating will be an integral aspect of the supervision work.  The therapeutic relationship, how this is experienced, the feelings evoked and the struggles inherent in being alongside a person in psychological and emotional pain can be explored and understood in the safe and containing 'space' of the supervisory relationship or group.  Although a psychodynamic 'knowledge' of the therapeutic relationship is at the core of my model, as an integrative psychotherapist my way of working and being as a therapist contains elements and understanding from other theories and philosophies, all of which are woven into my approach.

Please use the contact form or telephone to arrange a free initial meeting with me to discuss your supervisory needs and to consider whether you would like to try working together.
